About the Author
Kathy Unruh started playing guitar at age 15. Her early influences included... The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchel, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix... and other famous superstars of the 60s generation. Her teaching career began in 1983 after she was invited by the owner of a local music store to help with a beginner guitar class he was offering. It wasn't long until she began giving private guitar lessons from her own home.
In 1987 Kathy joined a Christian band called Wings of the Morning, playing rhythm and lead guitar. She and another member of the group wrote all the songs which they performed at public venues in the area where they lived.
After Wings of the Morning disbanded, Kathy and another friend formed a new Christian band called Mission. They also wrote and performed all their own songs. In 1997 Mission made an album of their original music which they used to broaden their evangelistic outreach.
It was during this time that Kathy also became a performing member of the Western Montana Classical Guitar Society and took part in several Master Classes to further her classical guitar education. In 1999 she had the opportunity to attend the 25th Anniversary Christopher Parkening Master Class in Bozeman, Montana where she was able to meet master Parkening.
Kathy built her own website in 2003 so that she could share her original music with more people and offer guitar lessons to students online. In 2005, to her surprise, she was contacted by a television producer after he had visited her website and listened to the songs she had written. He liked what he heard and asked if he could use one for a TV documentary he was creating about Hurricane Katrina. An agreement was reached and he decided to use two original songs, one written by Kathy, the other written with her husband James, in a television documentary called: Hurricane Katrina- A Test of Faith.
In the summer of 2009 Kathy attended the Alex de Grassi Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop where she met and performed for one of her favorite guitar players... Alex de Grassi.
Kathy currently lives with her husband in beautiful western Montana where she has taught guitar for over 25 years. She created the ABC Learn Guitar eBook in order to provide online students with an easy, step by step method for learning how to play the guitar.
